What is Law-GAT?
Law-GAT is a standardized assessment test conducted by the Education Testing Council (ETC) under the Higher Education Commission Pakistan. It is specifically designed for law graduates and is a compulsory prerequisite for enrolment to the Bar as an Advocate. The test is conducted on a quarterly basis in major cities across Pakistan. The purpose of the Law-GAT is to evaluate the legal knowledge and academic competence of law graduates before they are allowed to practice as advocates.
Who Can Apply for Law-GAT?
Any candidate who has completed a Bachelor’s degree in Law or an equivalent qualification from a local or foreign university that is recognized by HEC or the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) is eligible to apply for the Law-GAT. However, candidates who are currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree in Law are not eligible to sit in the test. Similarly, those who have already qualified the Law-GAT or have already availed seven (07) attempts are also ineligible to apply again.
Curriculum and Test Pattern
The Law-GAT 2026 will consist entirely of Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs). The revised curriculum for the Law-GAT can be downloaded directly from the HEC website at: https://www.hec.gov.pk/english/services/students/etc/Documents/Curriculum-LAW-GAT-test.pdf. Candidates are strongly advised to thoroughly review the curriculum before preparing for the test to ensure they cover all relevant legal subjects and topics included in the assessment.
Qualifying Score and Validity
To pass the Law-GAT, a candidate must score a minimum of 50 out of 100, which is considered the qualifying score. In addition, candidates must also meet any other criteria set by the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) Rules and Regulations in order to enrol to the Bar. Candidates are allowed a maximum of seven (07) chances to pass the test, and a 50% score is required to qualify successfully.
